My 10 year old son LOVES a game, a negotiation, a challenge, rewards, you name it! Sometimes to get him to do something he doesn't want to do, I need to incentivize him a little.
I wanted to walk 1.5 miles to pick up my other son instead of taking the bus. He is NOT a fan of just walking, so he asked me if I could get him an orange juice at the end of our walk. To him that is a treat because I don't really buy my kids juice. Deal!
At the start of our walk, there was a Trader Joes, and I told him we could just get the orange juice in there, as long as he agreed to continue on our walk. My kid is a boy of his word, so he did!
I have been talking to my boys since they were very young about food, nutrition, how it works, and how it makes them feel. Helping them connect the dots to what they ate and how their body is responding. Naturally (for them!), this brings up conversations around food.
The other day I overheard my younger son rattling off the food label ingredients to my older son. Yes, I pat myself on the back!
Soooo, on our walk, with orange juice in hand, my kid started to ask me a bunch of questions about the juice and sugar. Remember he likes games? Well it all started by us guessing how much sugar was in the 16oz bottle of orange juice I got him. Then, I quizzed him on the label, because we needed to gather more info to do some math. To get the actual amount of sugar in the bottle.
→ Do you know how much sugar is in a 16oz bottle of orange juice?
→ Do you know where to look on the label to come up with the correct answer?
The conversation then led to what is the difference between having a whole orange vs just the juice. Which naturally led us to talk about fiber.
→ Do you know the difference between eating whole fruits vs having fruit juice?
→ Do you know what fiber is and what role it plays in the body?
I thought our conversation was so wholesome and educational, that I went through the entire Q&A on the Let’s Be Healthy Latinas podcast. To catch the whole convo, I invite you to listen in.
